What is Hypnosis?
Probably the best way to define hypnosis is to simply call it a "guided meditation." Most of us enter a meditative or "trance-like" state while
listening to music, watching TV, attending a good speach or a good sermon at church, while reading a good book, or even while driving, when you can't
consciously remember how you got somewhere. To put it simply, "hypnosis" is a more common state of mind than you might think, a naturally occuring one common
to everyone.
Can hypnosis control the mind?
Let me put it this way: do you give up control of your mind while watching a movie? When was the last time you got so involved watching a movie or TV show
that you actually felt emotionally involved? You were in a hypnotic trance, but you still had the ability to end that state if you chose to. Your mind may be guided by
a movie, TV show, or a self hypnosis program, but YOU still have the power to resist.
Real, therapeutic hypnosis is a partnership between the hypnotist and the subject, with the goal of creating change through a combination of deep relaxation
and "suggestibility". Hypnosis can help you to easily access your subconscious mind, and change the "inner scripts" that dictate you behavior. Let me
explain it this way; hypnosis takes you below the level of thought, to a state of "knowing". It is in this place where miracles can happen!
Some Clinical Definitions of Hypnosis
The American Psychological Association- "The hypnotic induction is an extended initial suggestion for using one's imagination, and may contain further
elaborations. When using hypnosis, one person (the subject- you) is guided by another (the hypnotist- Jane Ma'ati Smith) to respond to suggestions for
changes in subjective experience, alterations in perception, sensation, emotion, thought or behavior. Persons can also learn self-hypnosis, which is the
act of administering hypnotic procedures on one's own."
A physiological definition of hypnosis states that the brainwave level necessary to work on issues such as smoking, weight management, reduction of phobias,
and athletic performance is the alpha state. Another viewpoint states that the deeper theta state is required for therapeutic change. The self hypnosis
audios on this site utilizes a frequency of 7.8 to facilitate "physiological change". This is a low Alpha/high Theta state, very good for
accessing the subconscious.
Hyper-suggestibility theory- Currently a popular theory, it states the hypnotic subject's attention is narrowed by certain techniques used during hypnosis.
As attention is narrowed, the hypnotist's words over take the inner "script" of the subject. In this way, the self defeating behaviors and 'self talk' can
be reshaped into a more positive and prosperous way of being.
Informational theory- This theory uses the 'brain as a computer' model. In electronics, a system adjusts its feedback to increase the signal to noise ratio
for optimum functioning. Increasing the receptability of a receptor enables messages to be more clearly received from a transmitter, primarily by trying to
reduce the interference (noise) as much as possible. Thus, the object of the hypnotist is to use techniques to reduce the interference and increase the
receptability of specific messages (suggestions). The "Get Rich" program also utilizes binaural beats and Solfeggio frequencies to further "reduce noise"
and "increase receptability", in addition to the traditional hypnotic induction and progressive relaxation.
Hypnosis Research
There are two main approaches to hypnotic research- that which examines the 'state' of hypnosis itself, and that which examines the effects of hypnotic
suggestion. A number of brain-imaging studies have been conducted which used hypnosis. One controlled scientific experiment postulates that hypnosis may
change conscious experience in a way not possible when people are not "hypnotized". In this experiment, color perception was changed by hypnosis in "highly
hypnotizable" people, as determined by positron emission tomography (PET) scans (Kosslyn et al., 2000).
Another research used event-related MRI and EEG coherence measures, comparing certain specific neural activity "during Stroop task performance between
participants of low and high hypnotic susceptibility, at baseline and after hypnotic induction". According to its authors, "the MRI data revealed that
conflict-related ACC activity interacted with hypnosis and hypnotic susceptibility, in that highly susceptible participants displayed increased
conflict-related neural activity in the hypnotic condition compared to baseline."
(please note, research shows that hypnosis CAN NOT make you do anything you do not want to do, or to go against your nature.)
Hypnosis is Real, and It Works!
Through a combination of alpha and theta brain waves states, deep relaxation, and "suggestibility", hypnosis can help you to easily access your
subconscious mind, and change the "inner scripts" that dictate you behavior. If you are NOT achieving the level of health, success and happiness you deserve,
hypnosis can help to change it, much more easily than you "think"!
Let me explain it this way; hypnosis takes you below the level of thought, to a state of "knowing". It is in this place where miracles can happen. You can
experience a "Quantum shift" in consciousness, one that will leave you feeling and thinking as if you have always thought and felt this way..... it is like
you will eventually not remember a time when you were not healthy, wealthy and wise!
